Hi everyone,

I am very excited to announce that we will officially be upgrading The Miniclip Community Forums to vBulletin in the near future. No more hypotheticals - its really happening this time. Although I cannot give you a timescale yet at such an early stage, preparations to ready the groundwork for the move are already underway. I will use this thread to keep everyone updated as to the progress of the new site, answer any questions and discuss suggestions. When there is a particularly important development, I will post a notice on the index, so its not missed. Please note that the move is NOT imminent but will take place in the relatively near future.

I am giving everyone early notice that I am unsure how the transfer (i.e. compatibility of this software with vBulletin) will affect threads, posts and uploaded images, including avatars. While everything should theoretically be stored and saved within the database and I don't envisage any major problems, it might be wise to back-up ANYTHING of yours on the forum that you want to keep. Its always better to be safe than sorry.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PROGRESS UPDATE

22/02/17

KING-OLE has offered to transfer ownership of the forum to me so I may proceed with the upgrade myself, as he is very busy. I have contacted MyFanForums to inquire about this, the webmaster has verified the request, and explained that I need to now wait a few days before the transfer is made. I will contact him again on Monday 27th.

I'm looking forward to this, but am a little concerned about a domain name.

The old Ritz cinema houses in this country for 80 Years, now running as venue's like Bingo or Night venue's still named Ritz have suddenly found a name lawsuit from the London Ritz Hotel which has been called Ritz longer.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-39041076

The ideal domain will include the name "Miniclip" and look like Miniclip.forum etc but we will have to be careful as paying for a domain only for Miniclip.com to make a lawsuit is a none starter. In a perfect world MC would let us have one of theirs, but I see no problem if we have something like miniclipgamer.forum.com Smile

You're way ahead of me, Martin. Razz

URL SUGGESTIONS

I would like to hear everyone's suggestions for a URL for our new forum! You are welcome to submit as many ideas as you like, keeping in mind the issue of copyright that Martin just highlighted.

We'll be accepting ideas for roughly two weeks, after which staff will pick the strongest URL's submitted and those will go through to a public vote to decide the one that we shall use.

Here are some helpful tips taken from the GoDaddy website, when choosing a URL.

Quote:
Choosing a domain name is similar to choosing a company name — it requires a lot of thought and consideration. Your domain name is your identity on the web; you want to make sure you choose a domain name that not only fits your business, but is also easy to find and promote.

Follow the steps below to help you pick the perfect domain name.

1. Make it easy to type

Finding a domain name that’s easy to type is critical to online success. If you use slang (u instead of you) or words with multiple spellings (express vs. xpress), it might be harder for customers to find your site.

2. Keep it short

If your domain name is long and complex, you risk customers mistyping or misspelling it. Short and simple is the way to go.

3. Use keywords

Try using keywords that describe your business and the services you offer. For example, if you’re a glass replacement business, you may want to register GlassRepair.com or GlassReplacement.com.
Include the keywords that people enter when searching for your products or services.

It helps improve your rank on search engines (which increases traffic) and just makes more sense to your customers.

4. Target your area

If your business is local, consider including your city or state in your domain name to make it easy for local customers to find and remember. Example: PhoenixGlassRepair.com.

5. Avoid numbers and hyphens

Numbers and hyphens are often misunderstood — people who hear your website address don’t know if you’re using a numeral (5) or it’s spelled out (five) or they misplace or forget the dash. If you need these in your domain, register the different variations to be safe.

6. Be memorable

There are millions of registered domain names, so having a domain that’s catchy and memorable is essential. Once you’ve come up with a name, share it with close friends to make sure it sounds appealing and makes sense to others.

7. Research it

Make sure the name you’ve selected isn’t trademarked, copyrighted or being used by another company. It could result in a huge legal mess that could cost you a fortune, as well as your domain!

Wow it all sounds very exciting this Nirvana of all forums,
and you have obviously put a lot of time, thought, effort and money into it.
Thank you!

I am a little concerned however, about the possibility of losing the content of this forum.
Collectively we have a lot of memories on here and I find the thought of it all being lost,
as happened to you guys on the original forum, quite upsetting.
It would be a nigh on impossible task to personally copy and save everything.

Realistically what are the chances that our old stuff will be lost,
and how long do we have to try and save what we can?
I know you are not sure of the time scale but
can you say if we are talking days,
weeks or months?

As for the domain name, my suggestion is:

Miniclippersforum.com

I think its extremely unlikely that we will lose any data. When the database is downloaded, everything contained on this forum will be there. The only thing I am unsure about is "attached files" that have been uploaded to MyFanForum's server. I do not know if those will be preserved. I for one have attached a lot of images to my posts this way.

My main concern is to do with how smoothly vBulletin will take to this very old software. Although, when the old Miniclip Forums first opened in 2003, they were using the exact same software as we are, and successfully upgraded to vBulletin in late 2004, so I see no reason why we can't do the same. If necessary, we'll just upgrade to vBulletin 3, then update to vBulletin 4, 5 or whatever at a later date. I'm in contact with some knowledgeable people, as well as the assistance I'm entitled to from vBulletin support as a paid member, and nothing will happen until we're completely happy that everything's going to work out. I'm quite sure it will. Smile

Has anyone had any recent contact with miniclip to let them know our plans ? It might be a good idea as a courtesy to let them know and to also check with them about using the name " miniclip " in the domain name ?

Yeah this is a good idea, although I can't see there being too much of a problem with us being an unofficial miniclip community, but having miniclip or mc, or the like in the domain name would probably make us easier to find for miniclip players.

I think someone should contact miniclip to make them know Tetsu's idea. If the domain name was something like Miniclippersforum and it didn't put anywhere  "official forum" (That would be stupid), I'm sure there wouldn't be any problems because the word isn't Miniclip, the word is miniclippers. They don't own that name... But if it was something like miniclipgamesforum it would be different, the word is miniclip.

I have to add I have a 6k followers twitter account called miniclipvideos. When I first created it, it was to call people's attention so they could take a look and know more about my videos. Miniclip official account followed me. They even congratulated me via twitter when I had 1m views, and we have talked via DM. They never told me anything about having their name on my account, like if there was,'t any problem. I guess because I just post about miniclip and it doesn't put official anywhere. In fact, I help them making Miniclip a better place. Laughing

I'll mention the plans to Benjo next week and run the URL issue past him. Miniclip has always seemed perfectly happy with our forum using their name and logo so long as we make it clear that its a fan forum and nothing to do with them. Smile

"PROGRESS UPDATE"

Hardly an update, but while I'm sitting twiddling my thumbs and waiting for Monday when I'll contact MyFanForums and Miniclip, I changed the site's description to "Unofficial home of the Miniclip.com gaming community" which you can now see in Google search. The old one "we can post tourneys here while we wait (for miniclip's forum to come back up)" seemed well past its shelf-life. Laughing

Nice move, I always wondered why Google showed that description, even after I changed it several years ago, maybe only something the owner password allowed?

Adding this from the other thread as I like the look of Spektral's domain suggestion and am happy to give Colin a quid on our next meetup. Razz

I really want this and I'm nearly crazy enough to buy it. Nearly, but not quite. Sad

Just saved you £2859.15....

Anything's better than wwwomf.myfanforum.org. Should've been done years ago.

Just my two cents:

I purchased CISCOKING.COM back in 2000, but got a letter from a CISCO lawyer to shut down my site immediately, despite the fact that (1) everything on my site was free to the public, and (2) I had a disclaimer stating the site was not affiliated with CISCO.

I had to let it go, and got ROUTERCHIEF.COM setup instead...

That said, some available affordable ideas could be:

- PILCINIM.COM

- MINISICK.COM

- MAXITICK.COM

- MAXISNIP.COM

Just an idea - is there a database somewhere with the emails of old-timers you could use to notify people of the new forum?

Might not be super effective -- nobody uses AOL anymore for their personal email, and I'm sure a lot of us exclusively use our work emails now and never check our old email addresses, so provided most of the emails in the database are from the early to late 2000s a lot of people might miss the email. But it could be a way to bring people back.

Ultimately, it comes back to the fact that I know Eric, Jordan, and I want to reconnect with Gillian and other people from the old days. And I hope we do reconnect with some people. Hell, I found this temporary forum by googling "Miniclip forums." Hopefully if anyone from back in the day wants to reach out, they'll do the same, and the new new forum will pop up.

Nice suggestions Ole, but I hope that Miniclip.com allows us to use a "miniclip" domain given our dedication to, and the positives we bring to the site.
The word "unofficial" will be prominent on the new forum description so we have to wait and see what their response will be.
We should have done this years ago while Bryony (Missmorris) was still on staff. Very Happy

Would be nice, but I would be surprised if they will agree to that, but let's see.

BTW, the domain extension .FORUM will come out in the near future. I don't have a date though.

I'm a bit of a hoarder and have a folder on my Gmail containing over 1,000 emails sent by members during and after my time as admin on the old forums. That's probably the closest thing to a database that we have. Given time I could potentially compile all those emails into a mailing list to inform them about the new forum.

Unfortunately, though, Gillian is not among the members who contacted me, so I cannot help with that aspect.
