8/31/2014

School started last Wednesday. I am going into my junior year at the University of Minnesota, Morris.
Classes may be difficult this semester for I am taking four science classes,
Natural/Unnatural Geologic Hazards, Principles of Physics I, Mineralogy and Crystallography, and Sedimentology and Stratigraphy.

I haven't posted in a while, so I will give some insight on how my summer was.

I stayed in my college town and did research under a professor for five weeks. There used to be a glaciers in the Midwest of the US, so I studied glacier till. I took sample of till at a couple locations and analyzed it in the lab at my school.

I also studied abroad this summer. In July I left for Italy. I took an environmental science course and studied the environment of Italy, and how it is impacted my humans, etc. We hiked and traveled a lot! I had the opportunity to visit a couple glaciers and other sites around the Italian Alps.

There was also amazing beer in Italy.

Oh man, oh man.

It's been about a year and a half since I last posted.

So, I'm graduating after this semester is over. Woohoo!
I also got into a graduate program to earn my Master's in Earth Science.

This semester has been rough so far. I just need to make it through these next couple of months.

Thanks Titan!

I suppose I can blog while I procrastinate studying...

11/28/2016

Soo, it's been 9 months since I've posted on the Miniclip Forums. A lot has happened, whether it be for good or bad. I'm just living my life to the fullest, well, trying to anyways. Things may start to get deep. I'm not looking for any sympathy, just simply spitting out what's on my mind.

You guys probably didn't know this (unless you're facebook friends with me) but I was in a relationship for quite some time... Starting in September of 2011. We had our ups and downs. Eventually moved in with each other in March of 2013. Three years went by and we were starting to drift apart. I was going to graduate with a bachelor's degree in environmental science and geology (double majored, woohoo!), and he was working as a kitchen manager in town.

I don't remember if I've mentioned this, but I did my undergrad in a town of 5,000 (~1,800 students at the school). I'm from a large city of 386,000.

But anyways, I wanted to continue my schooling and earn my master's degree. He wasn't there to support me. He wanted to stay in that small town of 5,000 people, and wanted me to stay there with him. I ended up applying to graduate school and I received a letter a few months later saying I was accepted. That was it for the relationship. We tried to make things work out, but our relationship was hanging on by a thread... The thread snapped in July 2016.

Let me rewind the story. So, after graduation I had to complete a field camp to earn my geology degree. I chose the shortest and cheapest field camp in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Black Hills were amazing. We did a lot of field mapping, hiking, and field trips. I was back home (that town of 5,000) in the beginning of June.

The week after arriving back home I had an 8 week internship lined up at the Soils Lab in town because I wasn't ready to leave just yet (and I was still with my boyfriend at that time). So, I worked with researchers at the lab. I helped out with a lot of fieldwork (hanging out with the cows in pastures and taking soil/biomass samples). And then brought those soil samples back to the lab and ran nitrogen and phosphorus extractions. I also did a lot of plant grinding for chemical analyses. I met a ton of great people during my time at the soils lab, and I was done at the end of July.

I had signed a lease to move into a 1-bedroom apartment for August 1st.

So, back to the boyfriend thing... Things weren't going so hot when I got back from field camp. We didn't talk. And when we would talk, we argued. We made the break-up official in the beginning of July, where I then proceeded to sleep on the couch for the time that I had left at "home".

If you've made it this far, you must care a lot. Or, you're just bored. But I give you props.

So, for the next 3 weekends I packed up my car and made trips to my mom's. I was able to keep my stuff there until I could move into my new place.

August went by, I spent a lot of time with my friends until school started up.

September: Classes started Sept. 6. Three classes and two seminars, whoa! And on top of that, I've been teaching two lab sections for an ESCI 1001 course, as well as proctoring quizzes for an ESCI 1012 course. I don't really have much to say about my classes right now. Calculus 2 is kicking my booty, but I've been hanging in there. Geomorphology (study of the landscape) and limnology (study of freshwater bodies) are very interesting. The seminars are so-so. The best thing about grad school, so far, is being a teacher (TA). I never thought that I would want to teach, but my students have been great. I enjoy seeing my students each week because they totally make my week 100x better. Oh, the other week one of my students said I should actually become a teacher or professor because I'd be good at it. I've always told myself that I wouldn't want to be a teacher, but my students are pretty darn great. Maybe I just got lucky.

Two weeks are left of the semester. I have a lot to get done, and yet I'm here rambling on about what has happened in my life since I last posted. I will start my research soon, hopefully get a lot done during winter break. I'll be running experiments to determine how slumps form in lake sediment!

Things can get a little rough, but just keep your head up. Some people have it hell of a lot more tougher than you do. Yeah, you may not be in the best of situations at the moment, but always know things will get better.

I want to thank MCF for being around when I was younger. Everyone I've met through the forums has helped shape who I am in some sort of way. I appreciate all of you.

Have a great rest of the year. See you next year.
Back to studying for me.

Smile

We all have ups'n'downs in life; it's matter of learning about those to keep life going...

All the best for with new future challenges. Wink

1/6/2017

I've been on winter break for about three weeks now. I head back on the 17th of January but I'm SO ready for the spring semester to start. A lot has happened in the past two weeks...
- My younger sister (Maddie, 15 yo) got busted for smoking weed last week
- My mom took her electronic devices away and Maddie decided to run away
(Maddie left a note and my mom was able to track her down)

So Maddie stayed with her dad in Wisconsin for New Years and my mom picked her up on Monday. That weekend I texted Maddie letting her know that I'm there for her if she ever needed anything. I went through a phase when I was around her age; I was depressed and had suicidal thoughts, even hurt myself. But, that's not the point. I was out to lunch with a friend when my sister texted me, begging me to come pick her up because she was bawling in her room all afternoon. After we finished lunch, we drove to my mom's and I stole my sister.

Did I ever mention my mom got married back in April? I've had a love-hate relationship with her husband for the past 4 years. But it's been more of a hate-hate relationship; I've always thought the guy was a complete jerk.

Anyways, I went into the house and up to Maddie's room. She had her bag packed. My mom and her husband were home and asked (more like yelled) what was going on. I told them I was taking Maddie because she can't stay at the house. Maddie suffers from depression, anxiety, and resorted to self-harm a while back, and it all seemed to start when my mom's guy-friend, now husband, moved in. My mom's husband said if she left she wouldn't be allowed to come back, upsetting my mom and my mom said HE needed to leave instead. The two argued and my mom said to take Maddie for the night, so she came with me. My mom picked her up and brought her to school in the morning. Later in the afternoon my mom texted me and told me SHE was going to run away because she didn't want to live at home anymore. My mom is still at home and Maddie is now staying with a friend.

As for school, I'm excited for what the new semester has to offer. I'll be taking Hydrogeology, Earth Science Seminar, an Independent Study, and getting some thesis credits out of the way. I haven't found out my TA schedule yet but I hope to teach lab sections for the Intro to Physical Geology course (ESCI 1001).

Have I mentioned that I don't want to become a teacher? And going into grad school I didn't think I would actually be teaching lab sections on my own. I thought being a TA involved helping out a professor with grading and getting exams ready, etc. But last semester I actually taught lab sections AND LOVED IT! I even had students tell me that I should become a professor or a teacher! Teaching really brightens up my week, all thanks to my wonderful students.

I'm just rambling on now, I don't know what I've written about and what I haven't anymore.

I doubt anyone (besides Zanna) actually reads these. This gives me an opportunity to vent, even if it's only to myself.

I have a tendency to lurk and read during the school year. I'm sorry to hear how Maddie has been doing recently and I'll be in the same boat as you soon... I'm TAing myself for one grad seminar this coming quarter at UC Irvine.

Have a restful remainder of your winter break, though.

1/22/17

Yesterday I attended the Women's March Minnesota, along with ~100,000 people.

A group from the Earth Science department decided to attend the event together. We met at the light-rail station that runs through campus. The trains were jam-packed and the only way to get on a train was to push yourself on - hopefully no one was claustrophobic! We got off a few stops before reaching the state capital in St. Paul, Minnesota, to walk to St. Paul college where the march was starting. We started at the front of the march, but somehow ended up in the middle by the time we reached the capital. What was supposed to take ~30 minutes took over an hour, and we were only marching 0.5 miles.

It was amazing to see everyone coming together. And the handmade signs were the best.

Everyone had their own reasons for attending the march. Personally, I believe that a man shouldn't be able to tell me what to do with my body. Women's rights are fundamental human rights. I also marched for action on climate change, affordable health care, immigrant rights, etc., but women's rights was my main reason.

It probably did make a difference for someone. It was amazing to see everyone come together to support one another. Everyone had their own reason for being there. But seeing thousands of people at an event like that makes you realize that you're not alone.

'I don't know what we want, but we want it NOW'.

Can you see the problem(s)?
